Radon is a radioactive element with the atomic number “86” whose radiations pose serious threats to health. It occurs in nature as odorless, tasteless and colorless gas. Any amount of the radiations emitted from radon is considered to be unsafe for human beings. This radioactive gas is known to be the cause of 14% of lung cancer worldwide. The lung cancer percentage among smokers and non-smokers has a major contribution of indoor radioactive radon. The main sources of radioactive radon in our environment are the radon present in air and domestic water supplies. The processes used to reduce the indoor levels of radioactive radon are known as Radon Mitigation.

Process of mitigation service:

Keeping in the view the threats of radon on the daily lives of human beings, serious steps should be taken to reduce radon gas levels in our environment especially in indoor environment i.e. in buildings, houses and apartments.The first step in radon mitigation is to check the levels of radon in the particular building or house. If the levels are higher than the recommended safe levels than a professional help should be seek. Different methods can be applied for the mitigation of radon.

The simplest method of mitigation is increasing the ventilation of the house. Due to increased ventilation, radon containing air can go outside the homes and fresh air with no radon can enter homes. This can be done by establishing ventilation systems in roof, floors, soil and basements. Suction mechanisms should also be installed in the void under the tiles and in the aggregates beneath the concrete slabs.

Purpose:

The basic purpose of radon mitigation is to suck the radon out of house. This can also be done by creating a void in the floor and then installing a pump that sucks the radon containing air all the way from the bottom of the house to the roof. This installation should run through the bottom, middle and up of the house ending at roof. PVC pipes can be used for this purpose. One of the important parts of mitigation systems is fan. Fan is the machine that will suck air from the house and throw it out of the house.

Exhaust fans and undergrounds pipes should be installed for that purpose. Another approach to radon mitigation is by sealing any voids and empty spaces present beneath concrete slabs, underground, in walls or roofs. This will not only limit the flow of radon in the house but also will increase the efficiency of other radon mitigation techniques thus making them cost-effective. Moreover, a detector should also be installed in-house as a precautionary measure that tells about the levels of radon in the building. Radon mitigation has a great impact on our health and society. By reducing levels of indoor radon, radon mitigation techniques reduce the risk of lung cancer. This not only will improve health but also save the money that is being spend on the medicines and treatment of diseases caused by radioactive radon gas.
